Ludwig Schaffrath (1924-2011) was an internationally acclaimed glass artists. His contemporary stained glass windows are famous world over. Next to working as an artist he was a teacher at art schools from Japan to the USA. When I started as a glass artist, I wanted to be like him, enriching architectural spaces with my artworks. He believed in the architectural space as a ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ (a complete work of art) of artist and architect. Even though my work took a whole different direction, I am still very honored to be exhibiting in his former studio, now called: the Schaffrathhaus. It is in Alsdorf, just outside of Aachen in Germany.
Master-Glass in the Schaffrathhaus
I will be exhibiting with my fellow alumni from Master-Glass alumni. Sibylle Gielen, former head of Master-Glass, knew Schaffrath and arranged for him to give a masterclass to her students shortly before his death. Unfortunately, it was before I enrolled, so I missed out on that. During the exhibition you can see my work about my foremothers, and artworks by other artists that show the immense diversity of stained glass as a material. All in the light of Schaffrath’s studio.
